Nakajima Suisan Grill 中島水産 

Nakajima Suisan 中島水産 believes strongly in serving only the freshest fish, to do their utmost to achieve their customer's satisfaction. They have 4 outlets selling fish in supermarkets, namely Meidi-ya and Cold Storage at Takashimaya, Bugis and West Coast Plaza. They have a chain of sushi outlets selling pre-packed sushi called Mr Sushi, located at supermarkets too. Amongst that list of outlets, there is only on restaurant, which is Nakajima Suisan Grill at Takashimaya's B2 - at the far corner.

There is a dedicated chef who tends lovingly to the grill, ensuring that each fish is grilled to perfection, whilst retaining its juices. A wide variety of fish is offered here: Saba さば (mackerel), Akauo Kazuzuke あかうお粕漬け (Pacific ocean perch pickled in leek), Gindara Saikyo ぎんだら西京 (Silver cod marinated in Saikyo miso), Hokke ほっけ (Okhotsk atka mackerel), Ika Teriyaki いか照り焼き (Squid marinated in Teriyaki sauce), Mero Saikyo メロ西京 (Patagonian toothfish marinated in Saikyo miso) etc.

All sets come with a bowl of steaming hot rice, a plate of Tsukemono 漬物 (pickled vegetables), a bowl of miso soup, cold tofu and salad. 

 

The Hokke is often prepared as such: the fish is sliced right down the center and split into half. This gives one good access to the flesh, and makes it easy to remove the bones. The Hokke has a high fat content, and is a good source of protein.

The Gindara Saikyo has long been known to be rich in Omega-3 fatty acid. It has a soft creamy flesh, which goes well with rice.

Nakajima Suisan is one of the few places in Singapore that serves Oden. Their Oden consists of a hard-boiled egg, Daikon 大根 (white radish), Chikuwa ちくわ (hollowed tubular fish cake), Satsuma-age さつま揚げ (fried fish cake), and Konnyaku こんにゃく (translucent blocks of devil's tongue starch). Served with a saucer of mustard. Mmmmmm...
